Legend has it that the foundation of Amalfi was a tribute of love that Hercules, son of Jupiter, wanted to dedicate to his beloved. The girl who inflamed the heart of Hercules was called Amalfi and had eyes the same color as the sea. for this reason that on her untimely death, the grieving companion wanted to bury her in a beautiful place, where the sea would forever embrace the mortal remains of his woman. On the tomb of his beloved, Ercole founded Amalfi, and her strength was a quality always highlighted in the history of the city. Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Amalfi Coast is one of the 55 Italian sites included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO. The Amalfi Coast appears as a balcony suspended between the cobalt blue sea and the slopes of the Lattari mountains, in a succession of valleys and promontories between coves, beaches and terraces planted with citrus, vines and olive trees. A unique environment, protected by Unesco as a perfect example of a Mediterranean landscape with a scenario of great cultural and natural value due to its topographical characteristics and its historical evolution. The entire area extends for 11,231 hectares between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno and includes 16 splendid municipalities in the province of Salerno: Amalfi, Atrani, Cava de ‘Tirreni, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Raito, Ravello, Sant’Egidio del Monte Albino, Scala, Tramonti, Vietri sul Mare. The cities and towns of the Amalfi Coast are different from each other, each with its own traditions and peculiarities that make it unique, however they are all characterized by architectural monuments such as the Saracen tower of Cetara, the Romanesque cathedral of Amalfi and its ” Cloister of Paradise ”of clear oriental influence, the church of San Salvatore de ‘Bireto in Atrani, where historically the investiture ceremony of the Amalfi Doges was celebrated, and Ravello with its beautiful cathedral and the superb Villa Rufolo. The enchanting village of Vietri sul Mare is considered the cradle of majolica, not surprisingly, the dome of the splendid church of San Giovanni Battista and the facade of the Archconfraternity of the Annunziata and the Rosario are covered with these colorful ceramics. from Amalfi arrives at the “painted village” of Furore, there is the enchanting village of Conca Dei Marini characterized by white vaulted houses of seventeenth-century origin and the emerald grotto. Also the fishing villages of Cetara and Maiori, among the seaside resorts most popular for their beach of fine sand, they boast two churches – respectively San Pietro and Santa Maria a Mare – with domes covered with majolica tiles.Along the coast, another jewel is the town of Minori, defined as the Eden of the Coast the breezy and cool climate. In the Dragone valley there is the lovely Atrani, far away from mass tourism. In this town that retains all its maritime authenticity, there is a beautiful square overlooking the sea.
