Abyaneh, a small gem in the heart of Iran.

Located at the foot of Mount Karkas, Abyaneh is a small village where the most authentic Persian tradition reigns. The town is located at the foot of a valley which, due to its morphological characteristics, has made it almost isolated: according to the last census of 2006, in fact, the population would reach 300 people, with a total of 160 families.

Abyaneh is therefore a small gem in the heart of Iran, where the most authentic Persian tradition has remained intact over time.

There are many reasons to visit it. One of these is that it is the oldest village in the whole country: according to historical sources, Abyaneh was born by the will of the Zoroastrians fleeing the Islamic conquerors around the seventh century. No less important is the urban beauty of the town: all the buildings, in fact, they are built with bricks obtained from a mixture of water, straw and clayey soil. Due to the high presence of iron oxides contained in the soil, all the structures have assumed an intense red color over time.

The result is surprising: a kaleidoscope of shades that varies according to the season and time of day.

The forced isolation due to the morphological conditions of the territory has allowed Abyaneh to maintain a truly unique strong cultural identity over the years, making it a sort of open-air archaeological and anthropological museum.

For example, not far from the center on a hill there is a fort from the Sassanid era, while among the houses stands a beautiful Zoroastrian temple. A must visit is the Jameh mosque, dating back to the eleventh century.

ATTRACTIONS

A further peculiarity is represented by the fact that the women of Abyaneh wear a white scarf with particular decorations: a tradition that has been handed down for centuries. Abyaneh is located about 70 kilometers southeast of Kashan, at the foot of Mount Karkas, and can be easily reached within a day from the main cities of the region.Iran is not only the land where there is Persepolis or where mosques or bazaars abandon , but here there are beautiful villages and magnificent landscapes; among the most fascinating in the Middle East. To experience another side of Iran, one must see the color of the villages, cities and villages such as Masuleh, Palangan and Abyaneh; it is a picturesque village located in the Isfahan province. Here is a typical scene, which plays its picturesque scenery and its simplicity to seduce tourists. Abyaneh is the village of reddish tones, it is located halfway between Kashan and Isfahan, it is an absolutely recommended stop. Abyaneh nestled in a mountainous terrain, brings together old ocher-colored houses where the villagers have always lived there in their own way with their particular clothes that they still wear today; women with headscarves decorated in Persian rose and men wearing black trousers that are excessively long and baggy. Historical accounts confirm that the city was founded since ancient times, even in the Achaemenid era. Its first inhabitants settled around the Barz rud River, which in turn is connected to numerous mountain springs that favors agriculture. It was during the 16th and 17th centuries AD, when the Safavids ascended the throne of Iran after driving out the Timurids, that the city reached its golden age. It appears that the high mountain location (2200 meters above sea level) has not deterred enemies from raiding around Abyaneh. The Shahs built three splendid fortresses to ward off invasion attempts, the ruins of which can still be seen. The houses are built in a natural and mountainous setting, with characteristic red mud as a building material. These residential complexes are the result of several centuries of development to inhabit, irrigate and exploit the slopes of the mountains. An eminent example of man’s adaptation to the hostility of the natural environment. Most of the workforce is engaged in agriculture, vegetable gardens and cattle breeding. During your journey in Abyaneh you will therefore have the opportunity to taste excellent local products, such as plums, pears, apples, apricots.

Abyaneh is located in the mountains of north-central Iran, at 2235 meters above sea level and is an ancient village known for its historic houses built with red clay mixed with straw. The village is surrounded by a beautiful valley where a seasonal river flows, while behind it is Mount Karkas which, with its 3899 meters of height, is the highest mountain in the mountain range of the same name. Abyaneh permanently hosts only a few dozen people, while others live there only during the summer.

Abyaneh can be reached in just over an hour by road from Kashan and just over 2 from Isfahan: being conveniently located along a short detour from the highway that connects Kashan to Isfahan, this village is a destination frequently included in itinerant travel packages in Iran.

The things to see in Abyaneh are its adobe houses, a particular mixture of red clay and straw, which also covers all the facades. The architecture is very traditional and the oldest buildings date back to over a millennium ago. Having remained difficult to reach from other cities in Iran, the village still preserves ancient traditions including a particular dialect still spoken by the locals and disappeared from the rest of the country, while the women wear a typical white scarf with colorful flowers. Just outside Abyaneh you can see the ancient fortress, known as the Abyaneh Castle, which stands among underground shelters for sheep used by animals during the harsh winter. For the complete visit of the village, including a short walk to admire it entirely from afar, it is advisable to allow about 3 hours, to which to add the time for transfers.Abyaneh is located in a splendid valley at 2235 meters above sea level, where in autumn the trees take a beautiful yellow and orange color. Behind the village is Mount Karkas (3899 meters), the highest in the mountain range of the same name. Abyaneh houses are built with red clay thatch, available in abundance from the surrounding mountains. Red thatched clay, technically known as adobe, is the main building material for Abyaneh houses, and is also used to cover the facade. The main tourist attraction of Abyaneh are its red clay houses, some of which are centuries old.
