MUSIC

The music of Iran as evidenced by archaeological studies on the Elam civilization, the oldest culture in southwestern Iran, has prehistoric origins. Traditional poetry and music of Iran aim to create a threshold space, a zone of mystery; a psycho-emotional terrain of suffering, melancholy, death and loss, but also of genuine joy, ecstasy and hope. Iranians have tasted much suffering throughout their history and are wary of their identity. Currently, economic sanctions have been re-applied to the entire Iranian civilian population, depriving millions of ordinary people of medicine and essentials. Traditional Persian music is important in this context of increasing aggression because it is a rich and creative art form. still alive and loved. It binds Iranians to a shared culture that constitutes the authentic life of the people and the country, as opposed to the imagined image of Iran presented in the Western media that begins and ends with politics. This is deeply soulful music, similar to form but to the soul of artists like John Coltrane or Van Morrison. In the Persian tradition, music is not just for pleasure, it has a transformative purpose. The sound is intended to effect a change in the listener’s consciousness, to bring them into a spiritual state (hal) Like other ancient systems, in the Persian tradition it is believed that the perfection of the formal structures of beautiful music comes from God, as in the Pythagorean phrase, the “music of the spheres”. Since traditional Persian music has been heavily influenced by Sufism, the mystical aspect of Islam, many rhythmic performances (tasnif, as opposed to Avaz) can (remotely) recall the sounds of ceremonies Sufi music (sama), with powerful trance-inducing rhythms. Traditional Persian instruments are: Daf- Tonbak-Dotableh- Dammam-Dohol-Dayereh-tar- 2tar- 3tar- senj- Kamanche-Barbat oud-Tanbur -ghanun-ney -neyanbun-Sorna-Korna and Santur

Iranian music today in addition to preserving the so-called traditional Persian music has developed a music in new genres: pop, rock, metal, hip hop and electronic. The Iranian style of music has influenced the music of the Caucasus area, Central Asia and those nations that were part of Iran in the past including the music of Armenia, the music of Azerbaijan, the music of Turkey and the music of Tajikistan.
