The city “of wind and boulder”, as described by Gabriele D’Annunzio. Volterra, perched on the hill overlooking the Val di Cecina, can boast an origin dating back to the Etruscans, who made Velathri a center of primary importance in the production of alabaster.The Romans renamed it Volaterrae and enriched the city with the theater and the thermal baths. In medieval times the city experienced a new phase of splendor, sanctioned by the construction of the Palazzo dei Priori, the first in all of Tuscany, the Cathedral and the Baptistery. through the historic center discovering the ancient testimonies of the Etruscan era such as the Porta all’Arco of the third century. B.C. Then the Piazza dei Priori with the Palazzo dei Priori degli inzi of the thirteenth century. and surrounded by medieval buildings, the ancient residences of the important families of the city. Inside the Pal. dei Priori you can visit the meeting room with a fresco from Orcagna and go up to the upper floors, once the Priors’ residences. sec. depicting the Deposition of Christ. In front of the Cathedral is the octagonal Romanesque Baptistery with its sober interior and a canvas by the Mannerist painter Niccolò Cercignano, called Pomarancio.The works of the great Mannerists can also be admired in the Pinacoteca and in the Civic Museum whose collection includes the famous Deposition del Rosso Fiorentino and works by artists such as Giovanni Pisano, Valdambrino, Ghirlandaio and Luca Signorelli. Close to the Pinacoteca you can admire the archaeological site of the Roman Theater dating back to the 1st century. and the remains of the thermal plant of the 3rd century. to the third century AD including two Etruscan temples as well as a Roman cistern. Etruscan Museum Guranacci is one of the oldest public museums in Europe, born thanks to the collection of the abbot Mario Guarnacci where finds of inestimable value are exhibited such as the stele of Avile Tite, the Shadow of the Evening and the urn of the Spouses.Eventually it may be interesting to visit an alabaster workshop to become familiar with this ductile material already widely used by the Etruscans for their cinerary urns.
